Unicorn Derby Day a sparkling success!
On 4th August 2018 Jubilee Pool ran our first ever Unicorn Derby Day and welcomed over 1600 visitors over this magical weekend!
The pool saw record numbers of visitors with many people travelling from Cornwall and further afield to visit the event and take part in the inflatable unicorn races. The day started with guests being welcomed by local choir, Maids of Melody. A huge 6 foot inflatable unicorn was sprinkling water from her horn into the pool and the 1930s lido was adorned with rainbow bunting and unicorn themed decorations. Races were a great success with numerous participants including a young girl called Poppy who won the under 8s race and Isla who won the 8-12 years category race. Big kids also had great fun competing in the adults’ race with local man Shawn winning a season ticket and a meal for two persons in the café.
Inflatable toys sold on site were sold out over the weekend as visitors enjoyed these in the pool. The pool also held an ‘inflatable’ recycling point where any damaged or old inflatables could be left at the pool for recycling. Jubilee Pool Penzance is working with another charity to recycle these and they will be eventually made into objects such as bags, as part of the organisation’s plastic free ethos. Other selected used inflatables are also being taken by a local community group for an art project.
The pool hopes to run several more themed events over the Summer and staff have their thinking caps on already for a special 1930s dance themed day, an end of Summer Pirate Day and of course their infamous Dog Day where people can bring their dogs to swim on the last day of opening for 2018 on 30th September. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook pages when these events are published.
“Unicorn Derby Day was a real success and it was fantastic to welcome over 1600 visitors and their unicorns to our much celebrated lido over the weekend. ”
Chief Operations Officer, Abbie Cranage said "“Unicorn Derby Day was a real success and it was fantastic to welcome over 1600 visitors and their unicorns to our much celebrated lido over the weekend. It was brilliant to see so many families having fun during the inflatable races and the community really enjoying the venue; exactly what Jubilee Pool is all about. We saw record takings from our pool and café and as a social enterprise, all of these profits will go back into the running of the pool to ensure such enjoyable events can run in future. Jubilee Pool is a game changer for Penzance, bringing visitors from all around the country to events like Unicorn Derby Day. What’s more we also raised awareness of our geothermal project to heat the pool, fundraising for which is critical before end September this year.
