Join the Friends of Jubilee Pool
If you love the Jubilee Pool - please join us!
Friends of Jubilee Pool were originally established in 1992. Our aim over the past 25 years has simply been to ensure that the pool survives, both as a vital local amenity and as a listed building of unique architectural merit and national importance. In February 2017 we were granted a 99 year lease by Cornwall Council and established a Community Benefit Society (CBS) to operate the pool.
The CBS has been awarded grant funding from Cornwall Council and Penzance Town Council to operate the pool during the 2017 season. In addition all profits generated at Jubilee Pool Café will be used to offset the annual operating costs of the pool.
By joining The Friends you will help us to ensure a sustainable future for the Pool. We believe that the pool is strategically important in the future regeneration of the town of Penzance and we wish to see it fulfil its potential, whilst also becoming increasingly self-sufficient and less reliant on public funding. Our membership includes many local people, but many members live in other parts of the UK or abroad. All of us have one common passion – we love Jubilee Pool and wish to ensure it remains open and thrives.
What we do
The role of the new CBS is to ensure the pool is operated on the community’s behalf and that it is an affordable amenity for one and all. We are actively planning for the pool's future and sustainability is at the heart of our approach. We believe that the pool should become more self sufficient in the future. One of our key future objectives is to ensure the exciting plans for geothermal heating come to fruition.
Much of our activity over the past 25 years has focused on raising awareness and promoting the pool. We continue to liaise with magazines, newspapers, TV and other media to ensure the pool is publicised to a wider audience. Membership fees are also used to directly enhance the pool, for example the beautiful flags created by local artist Lucy Birbeck every year and flown at the pool.
Significant in-kind contributions are made by our committee members; not least sourcing sponsors who are willing to contribute professional services free of charge. We are also establishing a reserve fund which will be used to match or prime any grant funding required for the pool in the future. We continue to maintain a watchful eye over the pool and explore how it might enjoy a more sustainable future.
Regular monthly committee meetings are held in Penzance. We warmly welcome anyone who shares our objectives to join our committee. If you have skills you think we might benefit from, please call Martin Nixon on 01736 758600 as we'd love to hear from you.
