If you love Jubilee Pool - join us!
The Friends of Jubilee Pool are a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Charity No. 1163358). Originally established in 1992, our aim over the past 20 years has been to ensure that the pool survives, both as a vital local amenity and as a listed building of unique architectural merit and national importance.
By joining The Friends you will help us work towards a sustainable future for the Pool. We believe that the pool is strategically important in the future regeneration of the town of Penzance and we wish to see it fulfil its potential, whilst also becoming increasingly self-sufficient and less reliant on public funding. Our membership includes many local people, but increasingly members live in other parts of the UK and also abroad. All have one common passion – they love Jubilee Pool and wish to ensure it remains open and thrives.
What are membership fees spent on?
Our principal activity is to raise awareness and promote the pool, so we liaise extensively with magazines, newspapers and other media to ensure the pool is publicised to a wider audience. However membership fees are also used to enhance the pool, for example the beautiful flags created by local artist Lucy Birbeck every year and displayed at the poolside. The Friends have paid for new flags every season for the last six years and believe they enhance both the pool and the promenade in equal measure.
In the past we’ve paid for the installation of hot showers, new signage for the pool, including a huge mural to cover the disused changing cubicles on the far south western end of the pool, and also purchased a roof covering for the café. Every year we help organise and promote the opening day and pay for the entertainment, including a live jazz band. Significant in-kind contributions are made by committee members, not least sourcing those willing to contribute professional services free of charge, so for example we sourced a sponsor to create this website. We have also established a reserve fund which will be used to match or prime any grant funding required for the pool in the future.
We constantly maintain a watchful eye over the pool, and will continue to explore how it can enjoy a more sustainable future. We believe that the pool is strategically important in the future regeneration of Penzance and we are working in partnership with Cornwall Council and Penzance Town Council to find ways for the pool to become increasingly self sufficient, and less reliant on public funding.
Regular monthly committee meetings are held in Penzance. We warmly welcome anyone who shares our objectives to join our committee. If you have skills you think we might benefit from, please call Martin Nixon on 01736 758600 as we'd love to hear from you.
